Frequently Asked Questions

Will I see a real doctor?

YES!!!

Dr. Meera Beharry is the owner and lead physician of Healthy Horizons Hebiatrics. She sees all patients herself.

Dr. Beharry is board certified in both Adolescent Medicine and General Pediatrics. She has over 20 years of experience caring for teens, tweens and young adults in a variety of settings!

Dr. Beharry was born in the Caribbean and grew up outside of New York City. After high school, she attended the Sophie Davis School of Biomedical Education which was a seven-year pre-med/medical school program at the time and is now CUNY Medical School.

Dr. Beharry completed medical school in 2001 at SUNY Health Sciences Center at Brooklyn where she stayed on to complete her Pediatric Residency including a year as 4th year Chief Resident at Lenox Hill Hospital in Manhattan!

In 2006, Dr. Beharry moved to Los Angeles to participate in 3-year Adolescent Medicine Subspecialty Fellowship training program at prestigious Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. She was drawn to this institution because of their strong programs involving youth with chronic medical problems, teen pregnancy and high risk youth in addition to international work. Dr. Beharry was mentored by Dr. Richard Mackenzie who helped formulate her approach to patient care.

After fellowship, Dr. Beharry returned to New York to work alongside the brilliant minds in the Department of Adolescent Medicine at the University of Rochester where she learned additional approaches to eating disorder treatment and health care in general.

Preferring warmer climates in 2012, Dr. Beharry joined the Department of Pediatrics at McLane Children’s Medical Center in Temple, TX. During her 9 years as Adolescent Medicine Section Chief, Dr. Beharry developed clinical services for adolescents and young adults experiencing anxiety, depression, reproductive health concerns, eating disorders, challenges coping with chronic medical problems. She started a Teen-Tot clinic to serve pregnant and parenting adolescents and their children. She formed a Transition Committee to address the needs of youth transitioning from Pediatrics to Adult Care.

During the COVID-19 pandemic Dr. Beharry was inspired to fulfill her dream of starting an adolescent medicine private practice. The advances in telemedicine during the pandemic made this feasible and Healthy Horizons Hebiatrics began!

Dr. Beharry enjoys teaching and maintains affiliate faculty appointments at Texas A&M University and the CUNY School of Medicine at The City College of New York. Dr. Beharry is also an officer of the International Association for Adolescent Health. She has co-authored textbook chapters and several publications on issues facing youth experiencing homelessness and she is often invited to present on issues of adolescent health.

In her free time, Dr. Beharry enjoys reading, watching movies, traveling and beach activities like snorkeling, sailing and scuba diving!

What do you specialize in?

Hebiatrics!

What is hebiatrics?

It’s a specialty that is focused on Youth.  We are more commonly known as Adolescent Medicine specialists.

Hebiatrics comes from the Ancient Greek words “hebe” for youth and “iatros” for doctor.  Another term for this specialty is ephebiatrics.

How are you different from other telemedicine services?

At Healthy Horizons Hebiatrics, we believe that continuity of care is very important.  You will see Dr. Beharry at every visit.

When needed, we can see you in person in New York City or Aventura, Florida.  In-person visits can also be arranged in other locations under special circumstances.

We will work closely with your primary care physician’s office
to help keep everyone on the same page.

We also have a patient portal that you can use to communicate with us in between visits.

We believe in holistic care.  Being healthy means that you are healthy in body, mind and spirit.  We will check in regularly on all of these areas.  Prescriptions are very helpful, but we also recommend non-prescription solutions to your health issues when appropriate.

What are the rates of your services?

Rates depend on levels of services needed.
Our base rate is $150 for 15 minutes, $300 for 30 minutes etc.  If this is a challenge, we can look into other options to help make care accessible and affordable.  Patients in FL and TX have the option of a membership which can lower costs.

We believe in providing high quality care and being transparent about costs.  We are a “cash-only” practice.  We do not accept insurance.  However, we can provide a “superbill” for your insurance if needed.

Please call us at 254-541-8158 to get an estimate of what your visit might cost.

There is no charge for a phone call to discuss your treatment options.

We choose patients over profit!
We put mission ahead of margin!

What do you mean “cash-only”?

We do not accept insurance to help keep costs reasonable. The time, resources and staff needed to deal with insurance companies often increase the cost of care for the type of services we provide.

Additionally, we appreciate the flexibility to practice medicine without having to meet demands of an insurance company that may not understand YOUR needs.

We take payments through our telemedicine platform or our electronic medical record (EMR) using your credit card or debit card. You may also be able to use HSA and FSA benefits to pay for care.

How can I set up an appointment?

Click here to access our patient portal and set up your account and schedule your first appointment!

For NY patients:

Per current NY law, we will need to schedule an in-person visit at our NY office before we start telemedicine visits.

Call us at 254-541-8158 for available dates as NY appointment spots are in high demand!

Your available appointment times don’t work for me.
Can I schedule at other times?

Yes!

Since we are a primarily telemedicine practice we can adjust our schedule to suit your needs!

If you can’t find an available appointment at the time you want, please send us a message to find a time that works for you!

I’m a physician. How do I refer someone to you?

 Great question!

We have a few options:

1) You can direct your patient to this site so they can set up a visit.

2) You can schedule an appointment for yourself using the same appointment system our patients use and we can discuss the patient in an “e-consult”.

3) We can also do a “review and recommend” type of e-consult. For the review and recommend consults, you send us the patient records and we will make recommendations for next steps.

You maintain primary care of the patient during the e-consults.

E-consults and “review and recommend consults” are $200. Please contact us for more information or to set up a session.
